RESUMO

The corpus callosum (CC) has been identified as an important structure in the context of cognitive aging (Fling et al., 2011). Interhemispheric transfer time (IHTT) is regularly used in order to estimate interhemispheric integration enabled by the CC (Marzi, 2010; Nowicka and Tacikowski, 2011). However, only little is known with regards to the relationship between IHTT and the structural properties of the CC with only few studies with specific samples and methods available (Whitford et al., 2011). Thus, the present study aimed at investigating this relationship applying an event-related potentials (ERP) based approach of estimating IHTT as well as diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) with fractional anisotropy (FA) as an indicator of white matter integrity (WMI) of the genu, corpus and splenium of the CC. 56 healthy older adults performed a Dimond Task while ERPs were recorded and underwent DWI scanning. IHTT derived from posterior electrode sites correlated significantly with FA of the splenium (r = -0.286*, p = .03) but not the corpus (r = -0.187, p = .08) or genu (r = -0.189, p = .18). The present results support the notion that IHTT is related to WMI of the posterior CC. It may be concluded that ERP based IHTT is a suitable indicator of CC structure and function, however, likely specific to the interhemispheric transfer of visual information. Future studies may wish to confirm these findings in a more divers sample further exploring the precise interrelation between IHTT and structural or functional properties of the CC.

CONTEXT: Different resistance exercise determinants modulate the musculotendinous adaptations following eccentric hamstring training. The Nordic Hamstring Exercise (NHE) can be performed 2-fold: the movement velocity irreversibly increases toward the end of the range of motion or it is kept constant. DESIGN: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate if the downward acceleration angle (DWAangle) can be used as a classification parameter to distinguish between increasing and constant velocity NHE execution. Furthermore, the kinetic and kinematic differences of these 2 NHE execution conditions were examined by analyzing the DWAangle in relation to the angle of peak moment. METHODS: A total of 613 unassisted NHE repetitions of 12 trained male sprinters (22 y, 181 cm, 76 kg) were analyzed. RESULTS: The majority of analyzed parameters demonstrated large effects. NHEs with constant velocity  (n = 285) revealed significantly higher impulses (P < .001; d = 2.34; + 61%) and fractional time under tension (P < .001; d = 1.29; +143%). Although the generated peak moments were significantly higher for constant velocity (P = .003; d = 0.29; +4%), they emerged at similar knee flexion angles (P = .167; d = 0.28) and revealed on average just low relationships to the DWAangle (Rmean2=22.4%). DWAangle highly correlated with the impulse (Rmean2=60.8%) and δ (DWAangle-angle of peak moment; Rmean2=83.6%). CONCLUSIONS: Relating DWAangle to angle of peak moment assists to distinguish between significantly different NHE execution, which will potentially elicit different musculotendinous adaptations. These insights are essential for coaches and athletes to understand how to manipulate eccentric hamstring training to change its purpose.

The structural and functional degradation of the corpus callosum (CC) has been shown to play an important role in the context of cognitive aging (Reuter-Lorenz and Stanczak, 2000). This is also reflected by findings of elongated interhemispheric transfer time (IHTT) in older adults (Riedel et al., 2022). At the same time, a protective effect of physical activity (PA) and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) on brain health including the CC is widely accepted (Hillman et al., 2008; Loprinzi et al., 2020). Based on this idea, the present study investigated the relationship between IHTT and PA/CRF in 107 healthy older adults (m: 64, f: 43) aged 67.69 ± 5.18. IHTT was calculated detecting event-related potentials (ERPs) using an established Dimond-Task. PA was evaluated using accelerometry resulting in estimates of overall bodily motion and time spent at higher intensity PA. CRF was estimated using graded exercise testing, approximating running speed at 4 mmol/l blood lactate concentration. The results showed a negative correlation between IHTTright→left and PA overall as well as in the male subgroup and between IHTTleft→right and CRF in women. This indicates a potential relationship between IHTT and PA/CRF. While the present investigation is only the first to hint at such a relationship taking into account the differential effects with regards to sex, mode of PA/CRF and IHTT direction, it is in line with previous findings and theoretical suggestions linking brain health to PA/CRF in the context of aging. Further research is needed in order to increase our understanding of the underlying mechanisms and of the influence of sex, PA intensity, degree of CRF and significance of IHTT direction.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of repeated explicit instructions on visuomotor adaptation, awareness, and intermanual transfer. In a comprehensive study design, 48 participants performed center-out reaching movements before and during exposure to a 60° rotation of visual feedback. Awareness and intermanual transfer were then determined. Twelve participants each were assigned to one of the following adaptation conditions: gradual adaptation, sudden adaptation without instructions, sudden adaptation with a single instruction before adaptation, and sudden adaptation with multiple instructions before and during adaptation. The explicit instructions explained the nature of the visual feedback perturbation and were given using an illustration of a clock face. Analysis of adaptation indices revealed neither increased nor decreased adaptation after repeated instructions compared with a single instruction. In addition, we found significant group differences for the awareness index, with lower awareness after gradual adaptation than after sudden, instructed adaptation. Our data also show increased initial adaptation in aware participants; regardless of whether awareness was developed independently or with instruction. Intermanual transfer did not differ between groups. However, we found a significant correlation between the awareness and intermanual transfer indices. We conclude that the magnitude of the explicit process cannot be further increased by repeated instruction and that intermanual transfer appears to be largely related to the explicit adaptation process.

This study aims to quantify the kinematics, kinetics and muscular activity of all-out handcycling exercise and examine their alterations during the course of a 15-s sprint test. Twelve able-bodied competitive triathletes performed a 15-s all-out sprint test in a recumbent racing handcycle that was attached to an ergometer. During the sprint test, tangential crank kinetics, 3D joint kinematics and muscular activity of 10 muscles of the upper extremity and trunk were examined using a power metre, motion capturing and surface electromyography (sEMG), respectively. Parameters were compared between revolution one (R1), revolution two (R2), the average of revolution 3 to 13 (R3) and the average of the remaining revolutions (R4). Shoulder abduction and internal-rotation increased, whereas maximal shoulder retroversion decreased during the sprint. Except for the wrist angles, angular velocity increased for every joint of the upper extremity. Several muscles demonstrated an increase in muscular activation, an earlier onset of muscular activation in crank cycle and an increased range of activation. During the course of a 15-s all-out sprint test in handcycling, the shoulder muscles and the muscles associated to the push phase demonstrate indications for short-duration fatigue. These findings are helpful to prevent injuries and improve performance in all-out handcycling.

Isokinetic strength tests are frequently applied to assess anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rehabilitation processes. However, diverging methodologies cause misleading conclusions. This cross-sectional study evaluated the effects of gender (male vs. female), group (healthy vs. ACL-injured) and limb (dominant/healthy vs. non-dominant/ACL-injured) on thigh muscle balance of 138 female and 126 male athletes (50% ACL-injured, averagely 12.8 months after surgery). Balance was analysed between legs (bilateral asymmetry) and between concentric knee extensor (Qcon) and eccentric knee flexor strength (Hecc) (DCR = dynamic control ratio, DCRe = DCR at the equilibrium point). Females were generally 17-27% weaker than males. Independent of gender and time after surgery, ACL-injured athletes demonstrated bilateral asymmetries (7-20%) in peak (PMQcon, PMHecc) and DCRe moments (p ≤0.030; 0.018≤ηp2≤0.215). ACL-injured athletes' affected (24-28%) and unaffected (12-24%) hamstrings and quadriceps peak moments were significantly weaker compared to healthy athletes (p<0.001; 0.061≤ηp2≤0.362). The bilateral asymmetries of PMQcon significantly decreased from early to late self-reported rehabilitation phases (p<0.001; ηp2=0.158). Peak and DCRe moments detected bilateral asymmetries, whereas DCR revealed ~50% false negative attributions. This knowledge provides guidance for future design and interpretation of isokinetic tests.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Exercise is an adjunctive treatment in the management of Parkinson's disease (PD), but barriers such as health status, fear of overexertion, and lack of transportation to the location prevent regular exercise participation. Disease-inclusive exercise classes may offer an opportunity to make exercise more accessible for older adults with and without diseases. However, the efficacy of such heterogenous exercise classes is still widely unknown. Therefore, it was the aim of this study to analyze the feasibility of disease-inclusive exercise classes in older adults with and without PD. METHODS: Twenty-one older adults (healthy older adults (HOA): n = 13; PD: n = 8) completed an 8-week multimodal exercise intervention in supervised group sessions. Exercise classes lasted 60 min with the goal of two participations a week. We assessed physical fitness (timed up and go test [TUG], 6-minute walking test [6MWT], single leg stance), depressive symptoms and cognitive functions, and we determined growth factors (BDNF & IGF-1) before and after the intervention to determine the effects and by that, the feasibility of a disease-inclusive exercise program. Repeated measures ANOVA were used to establish changes. RESULTS: TUG and 6MWT improved significantly after the training in both HOA (p = .008; p < .001) and individuals with PD (p = .024; p < .001). Furthermore, individuals with PD increased single leg stance left (p = .003). HOA (p = .003) and individuals with PD (p = .001) decreased their depressive symptoms between pre- and post-test significantly. Whereas growth factors tended to improve, no differences in cognitive functions were revealed. CONCLUSION: Disease-inclusive multicomponent exercise improved physical functions and reduced depressive symptoms independent of health status. This should encourage exercise providers, researchers, and clinicians to further investigate disease-inclusive exercise, because they may have an important social impact and represent a more inclusive society.

The Nordic Hamstring Exercise (NHE) effectively strengthens the knee flexors. Typically conducted without assistance, extended knee angles are not reached with sustained muscle activation in the presence of insufficient eccentric strength and/or fatigue. This might impair the desired neuromuscular adaptations and assessment accuracy. This study investigated kinetic and kinematic differences between assisted and unassisted NHEs (3 × 3 repetitions) performed by sixteen male sprinters (22 years, 181 cm, 76 kg). Kinetic (peak moment, impulse) and kinematic parameters (e.g., time under tension, range of motion to excessive downward acceleration (ROMDWA) were investigated. All analysed parameters significantly differed between assisted and unassisted NHEs (p ≤ 0.003; 0.635≤ Î·p² ≤ 0.929) favouring assisted execution, except for peak moments and maximal hip flexion. Repetition 1 of assisted NHEs revealed 21% higher impulses rising to 82% during repetition 9. Equivalent interactions of mode and repetition became apparent for time under tension, ROMDWA, mean and fractional angular velocity. Unassisted NHEs elicited substantially greater inter-repetition fatigue (rep1 vs. rep9): +79% fractional angular velocity (d = 1.01), -41% impulse (d = 1.53), -31% ROMDWA (d = 0.99) and -29% time under tension (d = 1.45). Assisted NHEs ensured higher execution quality and lower between-participant variability by facilitating a controlled full-ROM movement. Three sets of 3 NHEs sufficed to induce substantial fatigue within and across sets.

The grip position (GP) in golf substantially affects performance outcomes such as shot accuracy and hitting distance. However, it is unknown which specific GP (i.e., strong, neutral, weak) produces the desired shot outcomes. The current study investigated the impact of five systematically manipulated GPs using 15° increments between -30° (strong) and +30° (weak) on driving accuracy and distance. Data were collected using a Trackman™ doppler radar-based system for 28 amateur recreational golfers with a driver clubhead-speed range between 120 km/h and 153 km/h (M = 138.93 km/h, SD = 14.41) and a handicap range between -3 and -36 (M = -15.0, SD = 8.0). The results showed that GP significantly affected six dependent variables on accuracy (sideways deviation (left and right), accuracy absolute, clubface angle, club path angle, face to path angle, launch direction) and two outcomes on distance (clubhead speed and driving distance total). Overall, the optimal performance on driving accuracy and distance was found for the neutral and stronger GPs. Weaker GPs revealed significantly more adverse accuracy and distance effects. These results suggest asymmetric outcome effects of symmetrical GP manipulation. They also have practical implications for coaches and golfers intending to improve driving accuracy while maximizing driving distance.

PURPOSE: Concentric hip and eccentric knee joint mechanics affect sprint performance. Although the biarticular hamstrings combine these capacities, empirical links between swing phase mechanics and corresponding isokinetic outcome parameters are deficient. This explorative study aimed (1) to explain the variance of sprint velocity, (2) to compare maximal sprints with isokinetic tests, (3) to associate swing phase mechanics with isokinetic parameters, and (4) to quantify the relation between knee and hip joint swing phase mechanics. METHODS: A total of 22 sprinters (age = 22 y, height = 1.81 m, weight = 77 kg) performed sprints and eccentric knee flexor and concentric knee extensor tests. All exercises were captured by 10 (sprints) and 4 (isokinetics) cameras. Lower-limb muscle balance was assessed by the dynamic control ratio at the equilibrium point. RESULTS: The sprint velocity (9.79 [0.49] m/s) was best predicted by the maximal knee extension velocity, hip mean power (both swing phase parameters), and isokinetic peak moment of concentric quadriceps exercise (R2 = 60%). The moment of the dynamic control ratio at the equilibrium point (R2 = 39%) was the isokinetic parameter with the highest predictive power itself. Knee and hip joint mechanics affected each other during sprinting. They were significantly associated with isokinetic parameters of eccentric hamstring tests, as well as moments and angles of the dynamic control ratio at the equilibrium point, but restrictedly with concentric quadriceps exercise. The maximal sprints imposed considerably higher loads than isokinetic tests (eg, 13-fold eccentric knee joint peak power). CONCLUSIONS: Fast sprinters demonstrated distinctive knee and hip mechanics in the late swing phase, as well as strong eccentric hamstrings, with a clear association to the musculoarticular requirements of the swing phase in sprinting. The transferability of isokinetic knee strength data to sprinting is limited inter alia due to different hip joint configurations. However, isokinetic tests quantify specific sprint-related muscular prerequisites and constitute a useful diagnostic tool due to their predicting value to sprint performance.

The aim of this study was to assess muscle activity patterns (MAPs) in handcycling in terms of reliability and their alterations due to increasing workload. A total of 12 able-bodied triathletes performed an incremental step test until subjective exhaustion in a racing handcycle that was mounted on an ergometer. During the test, muscular activity of 10 muscles of the upper extremity and trunk was measured using surface electromyography (sEMG). MAPs were examined by calculating integrated EMG (iEMG), the onset, offset and range of activation (RoA). Parameters of MAPs were analysed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and two-way ANOVA with repeated measures. ICCs ranged from 0.775 to 0.999 indicating 'good' to 'excellent' reliability. All muscles increased their iEMG from low to high intensity with differing effect-sizes. Several muscles showed an earlier onset and increased RoA. MAPs in handcycling are highly reliable and alterated due to increasing workload in able-bodied participants. Whereas muscular effort can be examined in a single cycle, muscle activation characteristics require at least six to ten consecutive revolutions to achieve 'good' or 'excellent' reliability. At high intensity, many muscles demonstrated an earlier onset and larger RoA. Future studies should validate these findings in several elite handcyclists and investigate all-out sprint exercises.

The aim of this study was to assess lactate kinetics, maximal lactate accumulation rate (⩒Lamax) and peak power output (POmax) in a 15-s all-out exercise in handcycling (HC) and cycling (C) in terms of (1) reliability, (2) differences and (3) correlations between HC and C. Eighteen female and male competitive triathletes performed two trials (separated by one week) of a 15-s all-out sprint test in HC and C. Tests were performed in a recumbent racing handcycle and on the participants' own road bike that were attached to an ergometer. Reliability was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). POmax and ⩒Lamax demonstrated high reliability in HC (ICC = 0.972, ICC = 0.828) and C (ICC = 0.937, ICC = 0.872). POmax (d = -2.54, P < 0.0005) and ⩒Lamax (d = -1.62, P < 0.0005) were lower in HC compared to C. POmax and ⩒Lamax correlated in HC (r = 0.729, P = 0.001) and C (r = 0.710, P = 0.001). There was no significant correlation between HC and C in POmax (r = 0.442, P = 0.066) and ⩒Lamax (r = 0.455, P = 0.058). Whereas the exchange velocity of lactate (k1) was similar in HC and C, the removal velocity (k2) was significantly higher in HC. ⩒Lamax and POmax during sprint exercise are highly reliable and demonstrate a correlation in both HC and C. However, since ⩒Lamax and POmax are significantly higher in C and not correlated between HC and C, ⩒Lamax and POmax seem to be extremity-specific.

Nordic Hamstring Exercise (NHE) training improves eccentric hamstring strength and sprint performance. However, detraining causes rapid reductions of achieved adaptations. Furthermore, the transfer of improved hamstring capacity to swing phase mechanics of sprints is unknown. This longitudinal study aimed (a) to quantify NHE-induced adaptations by camera-based isokinetic assessments and sprint analyses, (b) to relate the magnitude of adaptations to the participants' initial performance level, (c) to investigate the transferability to sprints, and (4) to determine strength preservations after 3 months. Twelve sprinters (21 years, 1.81 m, 74 kg) were analyzed throughout 22 weeks. They performed maximal sprints and eccentric knee flexor and concentric knee extensor tests before and after a 4-week NHE training. Sprints and isokinetic tests were captured by ten and four high-speed cameras. The dynamic control ratio at the equilibrium point (DCRe) evaluated thigh muscle balance. High-intensity NHE training elicited significant improvements of hamstring function (P range: <.001-.011, d range: 0.44-1.14), thigh muscle balance (P < 0.001, d range: 0.80-1.08) and hamstring-related parameters of swing phase mechanics (P range: <0.001-0.022, d range: 0.12-0.57). Sprint velocity demonstrated small increases (+1.4%, P < 0.001, d = 0.26). Adaptations of hamstring function and thigh muscle balance revealed moderate to strong transfers to improved sprint mechanics (P range: <0.001-0.048, R2 range: 34%-83%). The weakest participants demonstrated the highest adaptations of isokinetic parameters (P range: 0.003-0.023, R2 range: 42%-62%), whereas sprint mechanics showed no effect of initial performance level. Three months after the intervention, hamstring function (+6% to +14%) and thigh muscle balance (+8% to +10%) remained significantly enhanced (P < 0.001, ƞp 2 range: 0.529-0.621). High-intensity NHE training induced sustained improved hamstring function of sprinters, which can be transferred to swing phase mechanics of maximal sprints. The initial performance level, NHE training procedures and periodization should be considered to optimize adaptations.

Recent work identified an explicit and implicit transfer of sensorimotor adaptation with one limb to the other, untrained limb. Here, we pursue the idea that different individual factors contribute differently to the amount of explicit and implicit intermanual transfer. In particular, we tested a group of judo athletes who show enhanced right-hemispheric involvement in motor control and a group of equally trained athletes. After adaptation to a 60° visual rotation, we estimated awareness of the perturbation and transfer to the untrained, non-dominant left hand in two experiments. We measured the total amount of intermanual transfer (explicit plus implicit) by telling the participants to repeat what was learned during adaptation, and the amount of implicit transfer by instructing the participants to refrain from using what was learned and to perform movements as during baseline instead. We found no difference between the total intermanual transfer of judokas and running experts, with mean absolute transfer values of 42.4° and 47.0°. Implicit intermanual transfer was very limited, but larger in judokas than in general sports athletes, with mean values of 5.2° and 1.6°. A multiple linear regression analysis further revealed that total intermanual transfer, which mainly represents the explicit transfer, is related to awareness of the perturbation, while implicit intermanual transfer can be predicted by judo training, amount of total training, speed of adaptation, and handedness scores. The findings suggest that neuronal mechanisms such as hemispheric interactions and functional specialization underlying intermanual transfer of motor learning may be applied according to individual predisposition.

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the biomechanics of handcycling during a continuous load trial (CLT) to assess the mechanisms underlying fatigue in upper body exercise. METHODS: Twelve able-bodied triathletes performed a 30-min CLT at a power output corresponding to lactate threshold in a racing recumbent handcycle mounted on a stationary ergometer. During the CLT, ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), tangential crank kinetics, 3D joint kinematics, and muscular activity of ten muscles of the upper extremity and trunk were examined using motion capturing and surface electromyography. RESULTS: During the CLT, spontaneously chosen cadence and RPE increased, whereas crank torque decreased. Rotational work was higher during the pull phase. Peripheral RPE was higher compared to central RPE. Joint range of motion decreased for elbow-flexion and radial-duction. Integrated EMG (iEMG) increased in the forearm flexors, forearm extensors, and M. deltoideus (Pars spinalis). An earlier onset of activation was found for M. deltoideus (Pars clavicularis), M. pectoralis major, M. rectus abdominis, M. biceps brachii, and the forearm flexors. CONCLUSION: Fatigue-related alterations seem to apply analogously in handcycling and cycling. The most distal muscles are responsible for force transmission on the cranks and might thus suffer most from neuromuscular fatigue. The findings indicate that peripheral fatigue (at similar lactate values) is higher in handcycling compared to leg cycling, at least for inexperienced participants. An increase in cadence might delay peripheral fatigue by a reduced vascular occlusion. We assume that the gap between peripheral and central fatigue can be reduced by sport-specific endurance training.

Muscular activity in terms of surface electromyography (sEMG) is usually normalised to maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVICs). This study aims to compare two different MVIC-modes in handcycling and examine the effect of moving average window-size. Twelve able-bodied male competitive triathletes performed ten MVICs against manual resistance and four sport-specific trials against fixed cranks. sEMG of ten muscles [M. trapezius (TD); M. pectoralis major (PM); M. deltoideus, Pars clavicularis (DA); M. deltoideus, Pars spinalis (DP); M. biceps brachii (BB); M. triceps brachii (TB); forearm flexors (FC); forearm extensors (EC); M. latissimus dorsi (LD) and M. rectus abdominis (RA)] was recorded and filtered using moving average window-sizes of 150, 200, 250 and 300 ms. Sport-specific MVICs were higher compared to manual resistance for TB, DA, DP and LD, whereas FC, TD, BB and RA demonstrated lower values. PM and EC demonstrated no significant difference between MVIC-modes. Moving average window-size had no effect on MVIC outcomes. MVIC-mode should be taken into account when normalised sEMG data are illustrated in handcycling. Sport-specific MVICs seem to be suitable for some muscles (TB, DA, DP and LD), but should be augmented by MVICs against manual/mechanical resistance for FC, TD, BB and RA.

J Strength Cond Res 34(8): 2276-2284, 2020-This study investigated the effects of short-term hypoxia (HY), hyperoxia (PER), and normoxia on anabolic signaling proteins in response to an acute bout of moderate endurance exercise (EEX) before and after an endurance exercise training intervention. Eleven healthy male subjects conducted one-legged cycling endurance exercise (3 × 30 min·wk for 4 weeks). One leg was trained under hypoxic (12% O2) or hyperoxic conditions (in a randomized cross-over design), and the other leg was trained in normoxia (20.9% O2) at the same relative workload. Musculus vastus lateralis biopsies were taken at baseline (T0) as well as immediately after the first (T1) and last (T2) training session to analyze anabolic signaling proteins and the myofiber cross-sectional area (FCSA). No significant differences were detected for FCSA between T0 and T2 under all oxygen conditions (p > 0.05). No significant differences (p > 0.05) were observed for BNIP3, phosphorylated RSK1, ERK1/2, FoxO3a, mTOR, and S6K1 between all conditions and time points. Phosphorylated Akt/PKB decreased significantly (p < 0.05) at T1 in PER and at T2 in HY and PER. Phosphorylated rpS6 decreased significantly (p < 0.05) at T1 only in PER, whereas nonsignificant increases were shown in HY at T2 (p = 0.10). Despite no significant regulations, considerable reductions in eEF2 phosphorylation were detected in HY at T1 and T2 (p = 0.11 and p = 0.12, respectively). Short-term hypoxia in combination with moderate EEX induces favorable acute anabolic signaling responses in human skeletal muscle.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine the reliability of maximal lactate accumulation rate (V˙Lamax) and sprint performance parameters in running and assess different approaches to determine alactic time interval (talac). DESIGN: Sixteen competitive runners (female=5; male=11) performed three trials (T1, T2 and T3) of an all-out 100-m sprint test separated by 48h. METHODS: Time to cover the 100m was determined by using a photoelectric light-barrier (t100,LB) and a stop-watch (t100,SW). Throughout the sprints, velocity was measured using a laser velocity guard (LAVEG) to estimate maximal velocity (vmax) and power (Pmax). The talac was calculated as the time when power decreased by 3.5% (tpmax-3.5%) and interpolated based on the sprint time (tinter,LB and tinter,SW). Reliability was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), typical error (TE) and smallest worthwhile change (SWC). RESULTS: After initial familiarisation, t100, tinter, vmax, Pmax and V˙Lamax attained excellent reliability (ICC≥0.90), whereas tpmax-3.5% attained moderate reliability (ICC=0.518). The reliability of V˙Lamax was higher when tinter,LB or tinter,SW were used (ICC=0.960) compared to using tpmax-3.5% (ICC=0.928). At T1, V˙Lamax was significantly higher when stop-watch measurements were used. There was no difference between tpmax-3.5% and the interpolated time intervals and the associated V˙Lamax-estimates. CONCLUSIONS: In running, V˙Lamax and sprint performance parameters can easily and high-reliably be measured using this sport-specific field test. Interpolating talac results in similar and more reliable values of V˙Lamax. To improve the reliability and accuracy of the stop-watch estimate, a familiarisation should be performed.

Background: Hamstring strength is important to prevent thigh muscle and knee injuries. Different antagonist-agonist relationships of thigh muscle strength are applied to estimate the injury risk e.g. the intersection point of eccentric hamstring (Hecc) and concentric quadriceps (Qcon) moment-knee flexion angle curves (dynamic control ratio at the equilibrium point = DCRe) and the dynamic control ratio (DCR = Hecc:Qcon). Objective: The aim was to quantify the relationships between DCR, DCRe moments and angles as well as their correlations with peak moments and contractional work of eccentric hamstring and concentric quadriceps exercise. Methods: This cross-sectional study included data from 238 healthy male participants of different sports. They conducted unilateral isokinetic tests obtained at 30°/s and 150°/s for the hamstrings (prone) and the quadriceps (supine). Results: Correlations between DCR and DCRe moments were significant, but weak to moderate in strength (R230°/s = 20%, R2150°/s = 26%). In contrast to DCR (25% ≤ R2 ≤ 46%), DCRe moments (80% ≤ R2 ≤ 86%) showed very strong relations with peak moments and contractional work of eccentric hamstring exercise. Discussion: DCR and DCRe assess thigh balance by using the same isokinetic raw data. However, weak relations became apparent. DCRe moments were stronger related to eccentric hamstring strength and work than DCR. Therefore, the DCRe moment may serve as meaningful measure of thigh muscle balance because increased eccentric hamstring strength promotes dynamic joint stability and minimizes injury risk.
